GERMAN SHEPERDS.

Dogs, people say they’re a mans best friend. Would you rather have a dog for a friend or a mouse on a wheel? So today I’m going to talk about German Shepherds because I don’t know much about them and this a chance for me to learn more and share my information with the class.

German Shepherds are believed to come from Germany and go back to the eighteen hundreds. German Shepherds were bred mainly for there intelligence. They are known to be the third most intelligent dog, behind Border collies and Poodles.

In the United states German Shepherds are responsible for more random bitings than any other breed, they have a known tendency to attack smaller breeds of dogs. Reports have found that statistically German Shepherds are the breed third most likely to attack a person. But one good thing is that German Shepherds bond well with children.

German Shepherds have a domed forehead, a long square cut muzzle and a black nose. The jaws are strong with a sharp kind of bite. They have medium sized brown eyes with a lively and intelligent look. They have a long neck which is raises when happy or excited and lowered when moving at a fast pace. The height for a male is 24 to 26 inches and the female height Is 22 to 24 inches. Their weight is 77 to 85 pounds.

The breed is so intelligent and learns so quickly, that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, police dog and as a guide dog for the blind. It has also been used in the search and rescue service and in the military. German Shepherds are a very popular selection for use as working dogs. Usually trained for scout duty, they are used to warn soldiers to the presence of enemies or of booby traps or other hazards.

Some German Shepherds have been trained by military groups to parachute from aircraft. At one time the German Shepherd dog was the breed chosen almost exclusively to be used as a guide dog for the visually impaired. In recent years Labrador and golden retrievers have been more widely used for this work although German Shepherds are still being trained.

There are three kinds of German Shepherd: rough- coated, long rough- coated and long haired. The coat most often comes in black with tan, sable or all black, but also can come in blue, liver and white, but those colours are considered a fault according to most standards. White is not an acceptable colour for the German Shepherd, however they are now being recognized as a separate breed, called the American white Shepherd.

German Shepherds are highly active dogs, and described in breed standards as confident. The breed is marked by a willingness to learn and an eagerness to have a purpose. Shepherds have a loyal nature, bond well with children and adults and make really good family pets. Most German Shepherds love to play all or Frisbee. This breed sheds bits of hair consistently and is a seasonally heavy shedder.

In conclusion I have found out that the German Shepherd has a loyal nature, are very intelligent and learn quickly are highly active and so have been used in a variety of ways such as a police dog. They also bond well with children and adults and make good family pets. Can we call them a mans best friend? I think so.
